A common question for designers, printers, et al is "What color can I make a QR code?"
What Color Can I Make a QR Code? While being two-dimensional in nature, QR codes, scan codes and the like are still symbologies, and must adhere to many of the same principles as bar codes. So, as a bar code, they can be printed in various colors and against different colored backgrounds (providing there is enough contrast between the two). Black and white is ideal, however, there are other color combinations that still provide the required contrast.
In an effort to provide a starting point, ASI Scananalyst have developed an ANSI Symbol Contrast Color Selection Chart. This tool is intended as a guide for determining the relationship between colors and ANSI symbol contrast by helping to understanding the effect color choice has on barcode scanability. It is intended as a guide only and actual results will vary based on the specific type of printing, printing inks, substrate, etc.).
Remember, as with any type of barcode, the only true way to certify the scan-ability of a QR code, Datamatrix code, etc. is by using a GS1 grade barcode scanning device.Chris Lehan is the Director of Product Development at Impressions Incorporated (a multi-color printer in St. Paul, MN specializing in the complete production of customized printing and paperboard packaging). http://www.i-i.com/
