Many people don't understand what QR codes are or what to do with them.
Young folk are often an indicator—so, do college students know what to do with a QR code? A demographic recently found that nearly eight out of 10 college students had no idea what to do with a QR code. Although about 80% of students owned a smartphone, only about 20% were able to successfully scan the example QR code they were shown. And, approximately 75% said they were unlikely to scan a QR code in the future.
I have vacillated in my opinion of the usefulness of QR codes—currently, I am on the side of being “underwhelmed.” QR codes are supposed to make it easier for people to use their phones to connect with information (read: short URL/sub-domain as an alternative?)—many campaigns seem to accomplish everything but that.
