QR codes evolved from the stacked bar code method to the increased information method using a density matrix.As bar codes became universal, the market began to call for codes capable of storing even more information. This was first achieved by increasing the number of bar code digits or by stacking multiple bar codes (above, left). These types of increased digit or stacked bar codes required more and more valuable print area and therefore complicated reading operations. QR codes emerged because of these issues.
