QR Code Design Considerations

QR codes, 2d scan codes and the like can be altered a lot more than you may think. You can alter the color and size, skew them, apply an anamorphic scale and distort them, etc.

Warbasse Design's clever QR code
design for the True Blood HBO series.
The code was rotated, distorted and
colored to tie in with the theme.

QR codes, 2d scan codes, and the like can be a variety of colors, provided there is at least 40% contrast between the background & foreground (ANSI “C” grade).

Whatever the orientation, design, etc. be sure to adhere to a quiet zone (margin) of a minimum of 4 modules, and keep the 3 detection patterns in corners unobstructed.

The code itself can obscured up to 30% (if using the highest error correction level). Various orientations can be applied - can be upside down or rotated, etc.

In addition, the codes can have perspective applied, can have an anamorphic scale applied and the modules can even be distorted.

Be sure to test your codes for proper decodability. It's best to use an ANSI, GSI-grade bar code scanner like the Integra 9500. If you do not have access to one, scan the code with a variety of mobile devices and readers.
